I had the pleasure of scoring this film for SPIKE TV with the great Gary Arnold at Chop Shop Studios in lower Manhattan. The documentary tells the story of Frank Shamrock's MMA career and his hard personal struggles with family.
In this commercial the school gets invaded by aliens, so Capri Sun and Saatchi NY were looking for an orchestral doomsday sound, yet it still had to be kitsch-y and comedic enough to suit a kid’s brand.
The rough cut initially had stand-ins for the aliens. These outfits were quite hilarious, so I used an electronic musical instrument called a theremin to really play up their comedy. After the animation was completed the aliens actually turned out to be much scarier, so we got rid of the theremin altogether and instead went heavy on a bass trombone for lower, more intense tones.
